From 1 to 5 September a group of experts, including researchers, veterinary professionals, extension specialists and beekeepers from several European countries, met them in Ohrid, North Macedonia, to discuss on the emerging risk of Tropilaelaps introduction in Europe as well as other invasive species threatening the beekeeping sector and pollinators safety.

The workshop, called “The Tropilaelaps Mite on Its Way to Europe”, was organised by the Julius – Maximilians Universität Würzburg and Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, with funding from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Apimondia partecipated through Fani Hatjina, chair of Honey Bee Health Commission. Participants once again called for stronger institutional preparedness; harmonized surveillance, diagnostics and rapid-notification systems to prevent or limited the mite’s expansion in the continent.
