Australian authorities confirm two new detections of varroa mite in Queensland: at El Arish and Cardwell, about 120 kilometres south of Cairns, on September 7, and a third suspected near Innisfail. The sites are more than 1,000 km from the previous detection area and represent the northernmost presence of the mite in the country. Considering the distance, it is most likely that the expansion into norther Queensland occurred through movement of hives.
