Potential Global Distribution of Aethina tumida and Its Natural Enemy

A recent study conducted by Chinese researchers and published in Insect used two ecological niche models to predict the potential distribution of Aethina tumida and its natural enemy, the nematode Steinernema carpocapsae. According to the results, suitable habitats for Aethina tumida may expand under future climate scenarios, particularly in Europe and North America. However, Steinernema carpocapsae also shows the potential for global spread.

The study suggests that the future distribution of the small hive beetle will depend on suitable climatic conditions as well as the presence of host bees. According to the authors, these findings could provide a scientific basis for supporting the prevention and control of Aethina tumida.
