During the Apimondia Congress 2025 in Copenhagen, beekeepers and representatives of beekeeping organisations from across Europe met to exchange experiences and discuss the future of the sector.
The programme included workshops, presentations of European research projects such as BetterB, B-THENET, BeeGuards, and INSIGNIA EU, as well as two roundtables dedicated to beekeeping in EU and non-EU countries. Together, European beekeepers represent more than one million beekeepers managing around 30 million colonies.
Discussions highlighted key challenges including pests and diseases, pesticide exposure, changes in land use, honey adulteration, declining profitability of beekeeping, and the need for stronger research and education.
An additional meeting organised with the FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia explored funding opportunities through programmes such as Horizon Europe and Interreg.
The discussions confirmed that stronger cooperation between European beekeeping organisations and a more unified voice at the European level will be essential for addressing the challenges facing the sector.
