URGENT: Apimondia Calls for Coordinated Action Against Tropilaelaps mercedesae in Europe

Following recent detections in Türkiye and Georgia, Apimondia is calling on beekeeping associations, veterinary authorities and relevant institutions across Europe to strengthen preparedness against the growing threat posed by Tropilaelaps mercedesae.

This parasitic mite poses a serious risk to honey bee health due to its rapid spread, challenging detection and potential impact on beekeeping. Prevention, early detection and rapid response are our first lines of defence.

Apimondia urges countries to strengthen surveillance and diagnostic capacity, raise awareness among beekeepers and veterinarians, reinforce border controls, update contingency plans and improve cross-border cooperation.

We encourage all beekeeping associations to contact their national veterinary authorities and work together to ensure effective monitoring, preparedness and coordinated action.

Protecting honey bee health requires urgent action and international cooperation.
