Varroa Can Threaten Tasmanian Crop Pollination

To date, Tasmania remains free of varroa mites. However, the recent introduction of the mite to Australia is causing concern among local beekeepers, farmers, and researchers.

A new study conducted by the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture (TIA) shows that the presence of the mite on the island could pose a serious threat to crop pollination.Researchers are particularly concerned about feral honey bee colonies, which could decline by more than 90% within a few years of the mite’s introduction. But managed colonies would also face significant challenges.

This scenario could put at risk the pollination of apples, berries, and seed crops. Further investigations will be conducted to assess how Tasmanian fruit crops are pollinated and to better understand the potential impact of varroa.
