Australia, Six New Projects Against Varroa

The Queensland Government has announced an investment of half a million dollars to support the management of varroa mites. The funding will support six new projects aimed at improving varroa mite control and preparedness:

  • An educational tour of a production nursery to improve preparedness and the management of varroa mites within pollination-dependent horticultural systems, delivered by Nursery & Garden Industry Qld Ltd.
  • Practical varroa mite workshops for beekeepers, conducted by Team-Australia Group Pty Ltd.
  • Testing spider venom-derived peptide formulations for varroa mite control, carried out by the University of the Sunshine Coast.
  • Developing precision double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) solutions to target varroa mites, led by the University of the Sunshine Coast.
  • Free training sessions and workshops on varroa mite management and resistance, delivered by the Southern Beekeepers Association (Queensland) Inc.
  • Developing six regional varroa mite management plans, carried out by the Queensland Beekeepers Association Inc.
