Dr. Fani Hatjina was invited by the EU project VALOR to participate in a joint workshop with 3 other projects (Butterfly, PollinERA и WildPosh) The aim of this workshop was to establish the overarching components of scenario narratives at an EU level that can then be downscaled and explored further by the different projects. To ensure that the scenarios are policy relevant, it was chosen to ground them on the basis of the successful or unsuccessful implementation at an EU level of two key EU policies affecting pollinators: The Nature Restoration Regulation (NRR) and the Sustainable Use of Pesticides Directive (SUD).
These future scenarios will explore 1) what the likely effects of future changes on pollinators may be, 2) what different actors can do to respond to these changes, and 3) how we can make land use and management support more resilient pollinator populations.
The organizers invited scientists from a broad range of different stakeholders across Europe, spanning the whole of the economy, from farmers and policy makers to businesses and NGOs.
The results of the workshop will be published later this year.
Apimondia suggested this exercise to be repeated in about 10 years time from now, when the first tangible results of the implementation of both EU policies (NRR and SUD) will be apparent.
