Apis florea Arrives in the Philippines

The spread of Apis florea is continuing across the world. Following its detection in Malta and Southern Italy, the presence of the dwarf honey bee has been confirmed in the Philippines. According to a scientific paper published in the Journal of Apicultural Research, ten colonies were observed at four locations on the island of Mindanao: seven in Davao City, two in Panabo City, and one in Monkayo. This is the first recorded occurrence of Apis florea in the Philippines. The introduction of the species was likely due to swarms accidentally on board ships involved in international trade.
