The Apimondia Pollination and Bee Flora Commission is currently coordinating an Apimondia statement on the topic of potential competition between managed honey bees and wild bees.
Honey bees are among the most important managed pollinators worldwide and play a fundamental role in crop pollination and global food production. At the same time, the world hosts around 20,000 species of wild pollinators, many of which contribute critically to ecosystem functioning and agricultural production.
In recent years, the scientific community has increasingly discussed whether high densities of managed honey bee colonies may affect wild pollinators, particularly through competition for nectar and pollen resources, pathogen transmission, or changes in plant–pollinator networks.
Recognizing both the importance of beekeeping and the need to conserve wild pollinator diversity, the Commission is working with international experts to provide a balanced statement on the topic.
