A beekeeping development project has raised a political debate in Wales. The Welsh Government has spent £25,000 (33,660 US dollar) on training courses for disabled beekeepers in Uganda. The funding is part of the £300,000 (more than 403,000 US dollar) allocated annually to foreign aid projects in Africa.
The courses are designed for 150 men and 150 women with disabilities, providing them with training in beekeeping and creating new employment opportunities. The aim of the project is to promote inclusive beekeeping.
The project has been criticised by the opposition in Wales, which argues that the funding should be spent on local issues instead. However, the Welsh Government considers the project part of a new international strategy to promote Wales around the world and strengthen relationships with foreign partners.
