Can beekeepers around the world speak the same language? Better yet, can technical words and expressions mean the same thing to every beekeeper in the world? Maybe so. A group of volunteers, members of the Apimondia Working Party on Bee Data Standardisation, has developed a controlled vocabulary of more than 8,000 terms — at its heart, the Pollinator Ontology (PolOn) — translated into 88 languages, so that a beekeeper in Morocco, Japan, Brazil or any other country can contribute data in their own language and have it understood everywhere.
