A recent study published in Apidologie examined the effects of an infusion prepared from the aerial parts of wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) and the buds of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) on honey bee health and Nosema infection. Prior to this, the researchers tested the toxicity of the infusion in honey bees and its effects on the histopathology of the bees’ midguts.
The results showed that the infusion was safe for honey bees and had a positive effect against Nosema. The infusion significantly reduced Nosema spore loads, with an efficacy similar to that of fumagillin when compared with the control group. Like other studies, this work indicates that natural treatments could be useful for controlling Nosema infections.
