European apiculture. Early detection, surveillance and preparedness will be essential to reduce the impact of this invasive pest.

كجزء من BEE-GUARDS project, Apimondia organised a dedicated workshop on تروبيلايبس mites at the Kazakh Research Institute of Animal Husbandry and Feed Production (KazNIIZHiK), with the support of the local beekeeping association.

The workshop brought together experts and beekeeping stakeholders to strengthen practical knowledge on the biology, reproduction, behaviour, detection, treatment and dispersal of تروبيلايبس. Around 28 participants attended in person, with additional participants joining online. Practical demonstrations included different mite detection methods and microscopic examination of live mites collected from bee colonies.

A key message from the workshop was that Europe needs to strengthen its preparedness before the mites become established. This includes raising awareness among beekeepers and competent authorities, improving import controls, ensuring apiary registration, developing contingency plans and establishing surveillance programmes where these are not yet in place.

The workshop also provided valuable insights into beekeeping practices in Kazakhstan, including visits to local apiaries, traditional nomadic beekeepers and colonies of Apis mellifera pomonella.
