Abeilles pour la pollinisation des citrouilles

It’s pumpkin time: in the Northern Hemisphere for planting, while in the Southern Hemisphere for harvesting. A recent study conducted in Brazil and published in Arthropod-Plant Interactions highlights the importance of bees in the pollination of pumpkin plants, especially the species Cucurbita moschata. According to the results, the main pollinators in the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil were Apis mellifera et Trigona spinipes. The activity of these bees positively influenced fruit set, weight, and quality, while also enhancing the antioxidant potential of the fruits. The study provides further evidence of the crucial role that bees play in crop pollination and agricultural productivity.
