Vespa velutina, commonly known as the yellow-legged hornet, is spreading rapidly across Europe and also in the États-Unis. This invasive species poses a serious threat to honey bees and other pollinators, as it is a highly effective predator. It also affects agriculture, with significant damage reported to grape and fruits.
However, Vespa velutina does not appear to pose a particularly high risk to human health. According to a recent study conducted in Spain and published in the Journal of Medical Entomology, human mortality associated with Hymenoptera stings remained stable over time and did not increase during the period in which Vespa velutina became established.
Although this hornet appears to present only a limited danger to people, it remains a major threat to pollinators, beekeeping, agriculture, and the environment.
